Lorry Mounted Forklifts are a crucial piece of equipment for transport companies. They attach to the back of Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGV) and allow for the forklift to be transported along with the vehicle and the goods. This can be beneficial for sites where there is not a forklift available, or the terrain is too rough for a generic forklift.
These forklifts are very lightweight however have the ability to carry sometimes up to 2500kgs! This is due to the stabiliser legs that they are equipped with.
The stabiliser legs are fitted at the front of the lift truck and make the forklifts “stability triangle” larger, therefore allowing more weight to be carried on the forks. Without these stabilisers, the Moffett would not be capable of carrying such weight and could result in a tip over and/or structural damage to the truck.
What is the stability triangle?
All forklift trucks form an imaginary triangle made from the front two wheels to the real axle of the back two wheels, or in some cases the back wheel. This determines what it can lift. By simply lifting too much weight or moving with the forks too high, this can cause the Center of Gravity (C.O.G) of the truck to fall outside of the stability triangle, therefore causing a tip over.

Showing you how the forklift is affected on different ground conditions, with different types of loads and at different heights. This will be shown during your theory lessons with visual aids and training videos to ensure understanding.
Because the Lorry Mounted FLT falls under a different category (T) rather than traditional Counterbalance Forklifts (B) or other machines you may have seen, it does require separate training to prove the operator understands the machines capabilities and is competent to operate.
